Is the cardboard sturdy or prone to puzzle dust?
To find the answer, we went straight to the experts. We analyzed over 40,000+ Reddit submissions from the global community to provide you with insight of the 20 most popular puzzle brands today.
Which Is Best?: Setting Your Expectations
Not all brands are created equal, and even among the top twenty, quality varies significantly. Some brands maintain a massive following due to their affordable price points and wide availability, even if their material quality is just average. Others have become the global benchmark that every new brand strives to emulate. Ultimately, the best brand depends on your personal criteria. Understanding a brand’s reputation for fit, finish, and variety will help you set the right expectations for your next puzzle. As the saying goes: Happiness is reality minus expectations.
Brand Ranking Methodology
To ensure the data was accurate and unbiased, we collected every valid submission on r/Jigsawpuzzle from December 2023 through November 2025. A valid submission must have identifiable:
- Brand name
- Puzzle title
- Piece count
- Image of a completed puzzle
Duplicate entries, partially finished and abandoned puzzles were discarded. The brand rank is based on the total number of valid submissions. The image featured for each brand represents their most-completed puzzle within the dataset.

SunsOut
Butterfly Migration, 1000 piecesKnown for their incredible variety of puzzle shapes and themes that are printed with eco-friendly soy-based inks. Fans have mentioned that SunsOut puzzles are a "hit or miss." Most appreciate the random cuts and their replacement policy. Others wish that their boxes are not as big and flimsy.
Laurence King Publishing
The World of Dracula, 1000 piecesLKP collaborates with world-class illustrators to create visually captivating and intricate scenes, such as the "The World of …" series. The puzzles come in a sturdy box and the pieces are thick with a matte-finish. LKP uses a ribbon cut, however, fans have noted that puzzles made in China have bland "2-ins, 2-outs" pieces and of lower quality compared to those made in the Netherlands that have varied shaped pieces.
Gibsons
London Landmarks, 1000 piecesA staple of British puzzling, Gibsons is famous for their thick, high quality, "blue board" pieces made from 100% recycled cardboard. Most of their illustrations have a British theme or depict nostalgic village life. Gibson typically uses a varied grid cut, but fans recently discovered that puzzles produced in the US use a random cut.
Bits and Pieces
Murder at Bedford Manor, 1000 piecesThis brand is a favorite for those who love "random cut" with a loose fit. Most illustrations are nostalgic or whimsical. Their 500 piece puzzles are more popular than their 1000 pieces. Fans mention that Bits and Pieces quality is not the greatest, but more than sufficient.
Heye
Movie Masters: Alfred Hitchcock, 1000 piecesThe go-to brand for fans of cartoon art, such as their popular Zozoville and Movie Masters series. Their premium puzzles come in vertical "triangular" packaging that stands out from other brands. Most of the puzzles are printed on thick board with a linen top layer and use a varied grid cut. Fans praise the quality as "very good" and wish the fit wasn’t as loose.
Trefl
Gradient, 1000 piecesBased in Poland, Trefl offers great value without compromising on quality, using thick cardboard and having an anti-reflective coating. Their primary cut is a varied grid, but also offers some with random cuts. On the downside, fans have stated that their customer service is poor and do not offer replacements for puzzles with missing pieces.
Wentworth
Colourful Cookietown, 250 piecesSpecializes in laser-cut wooden puzzles with distinct shapes, such as "whimsies" of animals and objects. Their wooden pieces provide a satisfying weight, have greater complexity due to using a custom cut, and contain no puzzle dust. Wentworth licenses their artwork from other puzzle brands and lesser known illustrators. Lately, some fans have discovered they are also using AI generated artwork.

The Quest for Knowledge, 500 piecesFocuses on high-end art, from Charley Harper to classic masterpieces, printed on sturdy, matte-finish board in a varied grid cut. The sophisticated imagery and elegant box design make these puzzles a favorite for those who enjoy the art work. Fans commented that the quality is "very good, but not fantastic."
Clementoni
Colorboom: Whirl, 1000 piecesItalian puzzle brand renowned for their "High Quality Collection," which features breathtaking photography, and challenging "Impossible" series. Their primary cut is a varied grid and the pieces are thick, sturdy, with matte finish, and loose fit. Fans’ sentiments are that Clementoni is a good brand with different ranges and varying quality.

MasterPieces is highly regarded for their hybrid ribbon/random cut with irregular shapes. However, fans recently noted that their US made puzzles now use a varied grid cut. As White Mountain has used multiple manufacturers in the past, the cut pattern can vary with most being a hybrid ribbon/random cut. Fans enjoy the quality of the puzzle, but some have concern with recent manufacturing changes. Overall, fans report they have good customer service.
Cobble Hill
Jardiniere: A Gardener’s Calendar, 1000 piecesCelebrated for its textured linen paper and matte finish that reduces glare, making it a dream to assemble "under bright lights". Their puzzles use a quirky, random-cut style and the pieces are "thick and sturdy". Majority of fans love their quality and customer service and as with any brand there are detractors as well.
Springbok
Sweet Things, 500 & 1000 piecesAs one of the oldest American brands, Springbok was legendary for its random cut, tight fit and thick pieces. However, fans have noted a drop in considerable quality since the pandemic. In 2025, Springbok’s parent company was acquired. There is hope among fans that the quality will improve under the new ownership.
Ceaco
Butts on Things, 500 piecesMost fans consider Ceaco a budget puzzle brand: adequate quality for the price paid. Their illustrations range from pop culture to life, such as Disney and Thomas Kinkade, and more. The puzzles use varied grid cuts and have a loose fit. Some fans have noticed that Ceaco’s quality has improved since their acquisition by Buffalo Games in 2020.
Galison
Wonder and Bloom, 500 piecesGalison puzzles are a bit thinner in thickness than other brands, but "quite good" in quality. They have a white paper backing with a glossy finish, unless it is a foil puzzle, which has a rougher, matte finish. The fit is fairly tight and can lift the puzzle without falling apart. The main complaint from fans is the lack of variety with the shape of the pieces. Galison uses a standard ribbon cut in which all the pieces are 2-ins, 2-outs.
Buffalo Games
Merry Mushroom Village Picnic, 1000 piecesBuffalo Games is a powerhouse known for including a fold-out poster in every box to assist with assembly. They are considered the largest puzzle manufacturer in the US and use varied grid cuts with good fit.. Their vast catalog of illustrations offer something for every interest out there from pop culture like Star Wars to top illustrators, like Aimee Stewart.
Ravensburger
The Bizarre Bookshop No 2, 1000 piecesRavensburger is the global benchmark for puzzle quality and variety that other brands strive for. Their optimal fit and durability with their distinct extra-thick blue board pieces makes it enjoyable to complete. They use different cuts with the majority being the varied grid cut. Most fans rave about the quality, customer service, and illustrations with some fans noting that quality for European made puzzles are higher than those made in the US.
